Underground Comix
Missing YouUnderground Comix is the comic shop where Douglas Mastriani works, a briefly glimpsed neighborhood location that becomes part of the practical staging of the police arrival at Randall Whitehead Sr.’s office. Across the street from the Fountain Building, the store links Douglas’s ordinary workplace to his timely assistance in Jessica Mastriani’s plan.
Setting and Routine
At nine thirty, Jessica and Douglas pass the shop on their way to the Fountain Building, which also houses a local bank and a yoga studio. The door sign reads “CLOSED”; the shop does not open until ten. This detail places the scene before the store’s working day begins and establishes its proximity to the building they are approaching.
Douglas’s Role
Douglas appears at Randall Whitehead Sr.’s office after the police arrive, wearing a Hellboy T-shirt and carrying an X-Men comic book. He asks Jessica whether he got the officers there on time as she requested, confirming that he has helped coordinate their arrival. The shop is not the site of the confrontation, but Douglas’s connection to it brings his everyday comic-book world into the operation.
Return and Significance
After thanking him, Jessica tells Douglas that they could not have managed without his help. He responds that he was glad to assist in getting rid of what he calls smut-peddlers, while invoking Sin City as wholesome entertainment. He then gives a jaunty salute and starts back across the street to Underground Comix. The return closes his part in the episode with a comic contrast between the seriousness of the police action and his exuberant comic-book enthusiasms. The store also gives Douglas a reason to leave the scene before he can interfere in Jessica and Rob’s awkward personal situation; he is expected to learn later that Randall Whitehead Sr. must personally present a donation check to the head of the Pine Heights Alternative School Committee, which is Douglas himself.
